Both Harvey and Legora are thin LLM wrappers, but the governance and deployment layers still matter for BigLaw, less so downmarket with simpler workflows and existing LLM contracts. Growth will decelerate as near-identical products compress pricing, and the remaining opportunity shifts to harder-to-reach segments: smaller firms, corporate legal, and international markets. Even at full global adoption, the legal AI assistant market likely remains single-digit billions. The path to justifying current valuations runs through the broader $30B legal tech stack or, more ambitiously, the $1T legal services market. The first requires displacing entrenched DMS incumbents. The second requires law firms to fundamentally change how they bill for time. Neither transition has started. Harvey and Legora offer effectively the same product with similar GTM strategies. We do not see an OpenAI vs. Anthropic dynamic, where OpenAI built its lead through consumer and Anthropic carved out a differentiated position by focusing on enterprise, eventually catching up. Harvey and Legora are competing for the same customers with the same playbook. This looks more like Uber vs. Lyft where the first mover stayed bigger and more profitable because both companies are playing the same game with broadly the same strategy.
