Explosive growth and massive TAM, but near-zero switching costs and Frontier Labs closing in. Can app builders build moats before the models they wrap make them redundant?

The vibe coding app builder category has limited defensibility today. Competition comes from peers, new entrants, and Frontier Labs that can move into the application layer. The clearest wedge is owning more of the infrastructure, which creates value beyond the model itself. Pure builders that mostly wrap frontier models with a UI are the most exposed, because model providers can replicate that surface area with relatively little effort. Today these products are strongest in lower-stakes use cases like prototypes, internal tools, and demos. That can still be a real market, but it is narrow and requires establishing a wedge before Frontier Labs make the same workflows native in their own products. The TAM is large enough that companies can reach massive scale even without strong moats, and multiple players are being funded simultaneously as bets on who survives. The question is not whether these companies can grow, but whether they can build switching costs or workflow lock-in before consolidation occurs—or before the Frontier Labs decide to compete directly. Despite its impressive growth, Lovable is playing in the least defensible part of the market and has failed to embed itself within the Enterprise dev stack, requiring further underwriting to be vibes-based.
